Our program
Mitsva Power is Sukkat Shalom’s education program for b’mitzvah students. The name of the program was chosen by the first cohort of students in fall 2020.
The program offers students and their families an access point to their Jewish heritage in a community-focused approach. In their studies, students learn about Jewish traditions and values in a contemporary context, including familiarity with tefila (service). They also gain a strong foundation in Hebrew reading which, among other things, increases their sense of independence and comfort in Jewish spaces. With the help of Jewish texts and concepts in Jewish thought, students think about and discuss what it means to be a responsible, compassionate and ethical adult in the modern world. Overall, the program aims to create a joyful Jewish learning space for young children who are at the start of their journey exploring their identity as young adults.
Mitsva Power welcomes students and families to be engaged members of a community and empowers them to take an active role in the formation and articulation of one’s own Jewish identity.
When and how
Traditionally, girls do their bat mitsva at the age of 12 and boys at the age of 13. However, while Sukkat Shalom welcomes this tradition, it strongly encourages girls to do their bat mitzvah at 13 (6th grade)
We meet once a week for two hours for a full academic year – some students might attend three terms depending on the scheduling of the b’mitzvah.
There is no pre-requirement on the level of Hebrew or Jewish knowledge before entering the program. Students are welcome as they are.
The program prepares students for their b’mitzvah with Sukkat Shalom, in which they will have an aliya, chant their Torah section, as well as help lead the service and deliver their Dvar Torah.
